Case Study

Writefully Empowered

A book for teachers, author Jacob Chastain’s Writefully Empowered is a workshop on how teachers can give voice to their students through empowered writing. My role as a designer was to create a cover that was marketed towards teachers of young adult students, had lots of movement, evoked hope and boldness and featured no images.

An early iteration, text runs off the edge to indicate writing outside of the box or in this case the recatange of the cover. The hand drawn bits that were done in illustrator are proofreading marks that reference the message of the books: Quote yourself/add equality space/make bold.)

Using the guide of the author’s student-centered approach, handwriting is used to meet the students where they are at.

Final cover design uses you-can’t-miss-it type and a loud color profile all in the shape of an exclamation point. It’s got movement, looks great at thumbnail size. All in all, the author received a cover that is layered with smart imagery that matches the genius that is inside its pages.

Since this was a book about writing, the prompt was to create a book cover that was typeface focused. No images needed. And it couldn’t look like a boring old textbook.

This concept is a visual representation of the students’ loudness, voice, projecting, confidence in their writing. It’s playful and has lots of movement.

Working with Sarah was a pleasure. She made the jacket design process painless and skillfully helped us move toward a jacket that suited the client's preferences and the book's needs. The end result was a jacket the client loved that will help their book stand out in a crowded marketplace.
